Family Learning

Throughout the year we hold various different workshops for our parents to undertake with their children.  The aim of the workshops are to support our parents, involve them in their child's learning, and to provide the opportunity for them to work one to one with their child.

By attending the workshops our parents are able to see how a subject is taught in that year group, as well as being provided with fun and useful ideas to support their child's learning at home.

Below is a list of some of the workshops we have held and those that we intend to hold:

  • Right Click Internet Safety
  • Readings
  • Play dough
  • Numeracy
  • "Dear Zoo": Play and Language Family Learning
  • "Commotion in the Ocean": Play and Language Family Learning
  • Healthy Eating

For further information please speak to Mrs Mockbil.

"Dear Zoo" by Rod Campbell

Family Learning Programme

Back in October we worked with a group of our Nursery families and delivered the family learning, Play and language course based on the book "Dear Zoo" by Rod Campbell.  The programme was spread over four sessions where the parents were invited to come and work alongside their children learning about all the different animals mentioned in the book.    Each family who attended received a resource pack that they could use at home with their child to continue the learning. In the resource pack was a copy of the Dear Zoo story book.

To promote the importance of reading each session started with the sharing of the story Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell. Parents were shown good practices of how to share a story with their child and were encouraged to continue this practice at home.   We used a wide range of activities to engage our families and support their learning, such as animal bingo, role-play, snap cards, word cards, colouring in etc.

To finish off the programme we went and visited the Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park to see some of the animals we had been learning about.

The families really benefited and enjoyed the experience which showed in the positive feedback we received, from both the parents and the children.

"Commotion in the Ocean"
Family Learning Programme

In the Spring term we completed a “Play and Language” Family learning programme. The programme was spread over five sessions, and our parents were invited to come and work alongside their children, learning about all of the different sea-life animals through the book “commotion in the Ocean by Giles Andreae.  We worked with our Pre- Nursery families providing the parents and their children an opportunity to increase their opportunities for learning.

To promote the importance of reading each session started with the sharing of one of the Sea0life animal poems from the book "Commotion in the Ocean", and parents were shown good practices of how to share a story with their child and were encouraged to continue this practice at home.

We used a wide range of fun activities focussing on all aspects of the curriculum to engage our families and support their learning, such as making our own Sea-life animals, size matching, making sea-life animals out of play dough, snap cards, and colouring in etc.  The children all loved making their own "Jiggling Jelly Fish".

To finish off the programme we went and visited the Sea-Life Centre to explore all of the wonderful Sea-life animals we had been learning about.   Everyone especially enjoyed the waddling penguins.

Each family who attended received resources pack that they could use at home with their child to continue the learning. In the resource pack was a copy of the book “Commotion in the Ocean”.
